Mikan
The mikan (also called "Satsuma mandarin") is a small Japanese citrus fruit. Created around the 15th century and cultivated throughout almost the entire territory, it closely resembles a clementine. It has no seeds, possesses a sweet and mild taste, and has a skin that peels easily. Its harvest occurs in winter, particularly in December for maximum sweetness!
This citrus fruit is among the most iconic fruits of Japan. It was once the most consumed by the Japanese, but they continue to devour more than four kilograms per person each year... Only the banana, an imported product, has surpassed the mikan in their hearts.
It can be eaten raw, in juice, used in desserts or to thicken a sauce. It can also be found in spirits such as gin or mikanshu, a liqueur made from this citrus fruit!
